Niki has been growing veggies since she was a child, but her techniques and methods for creating pretty, but productive gardens and harvesting year-round have come from years of experimentation and research. Her current kitchen garden is a 2000 sq foot edible paradise that combines a tempting mixture of heirloom veggies with fragrant herbs and colourful annual flowers. Her garden is perched near the sea in the Maritime provice of Nova Scotia, Canada.

Niki has been a garden speaker for over 12 years and has spoken at large and small events on a wide variety of topics that includes her passion, edibles, as well as ornamental grasses, perennials, heritage gardening and container gardening. For the past 5 years, Niki has had the opportunity to chat with gardeners and experts across North America on her popular radio show, The Weekend Gardener. It airs across Atlantic Canada, as well as live on www.news957.com from April through October.

Niki's first book, The Year-Round Vegetable Gardener is being released from Storey Publishing in December 2011 and she is currently hard at work on her second book, which will offer a mix of edible garden plans for a wide range of gardens - backyard orchards, urban roof-top gardens, culinary herb plots and much, much more. You can follow Niki's gardening adventures (and misadventures!) at http://yearroundveggiegardener.blogspot.com.

Amazing Edibles

Eating locally has been a huge trend in recent years, but you can't get more local than your own back (or front!) yard! Niki Jabbour, the author of The Year Round Vegetable Gardener is a dynamic speaker and will take you on an edible adventure that details planning, designing, planting, maintaining and enjoying a super-productive, yet ornamental vegetable plot. This interactive lecture will also spotlight some of Niki's favourite veggies (Sungold tomatoes and Lemon cucumbers!) and she'll cover the basics of ensuring a non-stop harvest, 365 days a year.

The Year-Round Vegetable Garden

Enjoying a year-round, non-stop harvest is easier than you think! This dynamic visual presentation will discuss the basic tools of the trade for a year-round vegetable gardener - from a simple row cover to the workhorse of the winter garden, the cold frame. She'll also detail polytunnels, mini hoop tunnels and cloches. Plus, you'll discover simple techniques like succession planting, interplanting and keeping soil nutrient levels high, which are key to a non-stop harvest. Finally, Niki will share the top veggies for the cool, cold and warm seasons. Which are the best varieties for fall and winter? How do you get cold season salad greens established in the heat of late summer for a fall crop? All these questions and much more will be answered during this exciting presentation.

I went home re-invigorated and enthusiastic about the possibilities for winter gardening - there were at least 10 ideas she put forward that I can go out and try RIGHT NOW and many more I look forward to putting into practice next season.
