If you love plants, have a good sense of humor and enjoy meeting fellow gardening enthusiasts we are meant to meet!
Gardening should be FUN and that's what I'm all about; learn while you laugh, and never take yourself (or your garden) too seriously
Born in England, Karen grew up with an appreciation for the beauty of nature and the wonders of gardening.
After moving to the Pacific Northwest in 1996 she joined Molbak’s Garden & Home as a garden plant specialist before establishing Le Jardinet in 2006. Whilst specializing in custom container gardens, Karen also extends that vision to design challenging smaller landscapes.
She is co-author of the award winning book Fine Foliage, (2013) writes inspirational design articles on her blog, is a regular contributor to several publications including Fine Gardening and is the PNW garden writer for Houzz. Her new book Gardening with Foliage First (Timber Press) will be available February 2017
As the container gardening instructor at Edmonds Community College Karen has the opportunity to challenge students to strive for excellence while her own container garden designs have been featured in many publications including Fine Gardening, Garden Design, Sunset, Gardens West and Better Homes & Gardens titles.
Karen also teaches a popular garden design course on Craftsy; Gorgeous Garden Design - Foliage & Focal Points.
Whether on the stage, television or radio Karen’s aim is always to inspire, educate and share the fun of gardening with her audience.
I regularly present seminars to trade organizations, international Flower & Garden Shows, Master Gardener conferences, Horticultural Societies, private groups, garden clubs and nurseries. I am happy to work with your event organizer to tailor a topic to suit your needs and the knowledge level of the audience.
Signed copies of my gold award winning book FINE FOLIAGE (co-authored with Christina Salwitz) can be made available after talks as well as my NEW book GARDENING WITH FOLIAGE FIRST mid-February 2017 onwards

PowerPoint
Succulent Chic; Learn how to get the most out of these beauties by blending colors, playing with texture and considering scale. Get ideas for new combinations using both hardy and tender varieties.
Dynamic Plant Combinations; pure plant lust - you'll be rushing out to the nursery after this talk. PowerPoint
Container Gardening; a 1 hour demonstration style presentation, planting two unique designs appropriate to the audience interests and season. Focus on teaching how and why a design works by use of color repetition as well as varying texture and form. Lots of fun with audience interaction and plenty of time for questions. Previous titles have included 'Pizzazz in a Pot', 'From Blah to Ta-Da", 'The Art of Elegance', 'Holiday Containers' and 'Pots with Personality'. Focus on Foliage would be a great demonstration style presentation to bring my NEW BOOK to life!
Reducing maintenance (and backache) in the garden; Life gets busy and we get older – two indisputable facts. For those of us who want to have a nice garden both these facts can cause extreme frustration perhaps even more so when we actually love to work in the garden.
Learn strategies to simplify your garden and your gardening to-do list. By identifying the chores which you find most challenging and understanding which plants are maintenance nightmares you will be able to make considered design choices. Learn to be the Master, not the slave!
'Show and Tell' type presentation
I also offer container design workshops for small groups of home gardeners and nursery professionals in my garden during spring, summer and early fall. Each workshop is tailored carefully to suit the group e.g. Fall Container Boot Camp was a big hit with nursery professionals this September! Please enquire for details.

Makes Her Design Formula Easy
Judy Roberts-Wabey from Edmonds, WA - 03/17/2017 17:24:55
Karen's talk made her audience feel they could actually duplicate the principles she was teaching. Our club was unanimous in her praise.
Fun and informative talk
Nancy Sarpola from Corvallis, Oregon - 03/08/2017 13:00:15
Karen's talk at the Hardy Plant Society of Oregon was clear and informative with just enough humor to keep it fun. Her slides were beautiful and ideas for mixing foliage plants in the garden usable.
Vanessa Gardner Nagel, APLD from Vancouver - 01/25/2017 22:27:59
Karen gave the HPSO in Portland, OR a wonderful presentation on her methods of mixing foliage. Easy enough for beginning gardeners to understand, but interesting enough for experienced garden designers such as myself. Karen's interjection of wry British wit make her talks all the more enjoyable!
