on 'Founding Gardeners'

Marion S. Letts, Director, Art & Antiques Forum from Charleston, South Carolina - 05/07/2012 14:04:50

Andrea Wulf's fresh perspective on our Founding Fathers' botanical interests helps us to better understand these statesmen: that they could be down-to-earth, as much as we like to put them on pedestals. Our great outdoors nourished their minds, in addition to filling their tables. There is much to learn from her book and talk--highly recommended.

The Founding Gardeners: History In A New Light

Katha Rohrbaugh from Owensboro, KY - 03/15/2012 17:10:35

If you are looking for a speaker that will captivate and inform your audience, Andrea Wulf fits the bill. No dry commentary here! Andrea takes the history we all learned in school and presents a three dimensional portrait of these great men that had a deep respect for the native trees and plants of America and just happened to create a new country along the way. Andrea is extremely easy to work with and answers all your questions promptly. She was a lively and informed speaker in spite of a hectic schedule the day before. We sold many copies of her books and are still receiving compliments on the program.

Made Me Want to Learn More

Robin from Seattle - 03/02/2012 11:56:54

Andrea's research into the history of American gardens was the focus of the lecture I attended, and she did not disappoint. Despite her internal time clock registering 4am at this 7pm event, she was engaging, funny and smart. Clearly, she dives deep into her research and pulls out historical tidbits, which she weaves together to tell the tale of how the American founding fathers found inspiration in the wilds of the American landscape only to bring them into their own tamed ornamental farms to create home gardens with our beautiful native plants.

I've wanted to read her book The Founding Gardeners for a while now, and now that I've heard her speak, I'm going to start it shortly. As well, her new book on astronomy sounds fascinating. Andrea addresses topics in a way others have not.

The Founding Gardeners ...

Mary Scott-Fleming from Charlottesville, VA - 08/09/2010 14:46:27

The world of "The Founding Gardeners; How the Revolutionary Generation Created the American Eden" was the perfect presentation for an Evening Conversation at Monticello, home to one of those founding gardeners, Thomas Jefferson. The story encompasses patriotism, political thinking, intrigue, and passion - whether it be about nature, gardening, agriculture or landscape design.
In her own inimitable way, Andrea Wulf once more shared her scholarship with an audience whom she also charmed and entertained. A delightful way of learning, and a definite recipe for success! (Mary Scott-Fleming, Director of Enrichment Programs at Monticello's International Center for Jefferson Studies.)
