Roger Hammer is a renowned, award-winning, South Florida naturalist, author, and photographer who is much in demand as a speaker throughout Florida.

Description

Roger Hammer is a native Floridian from Cocoa Beach and has lived in Homestead, Florida since 1969. He was the senior interpretive naturalist for the Miami-Dade Parks Department for 33 years (now retired) and managed Castellow Hammock Park, a 120-acre nature preserve. He is currently a part-time instructor and field trip leader for Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Miami. 

Roger received the first Marjory Stoneman Douglas Award presented by the Dade Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society in 1982 for "consistent and constant service in the areas of education, research, promotion, and preservation of native plants." He also received the prestigious Charles Brookfield Medal from Tropical Audubon Society in 1996 for "outstanding service in the protection of our natural resources." He gave the opening ceremony speech at the 11th World Orchid Conference in Miami in 1984 and was the Keynote Speaker at the 19th World Orchid Conference in Miami in 2008. 

Roger is the author of four Falcon Guides published by the Globe Pequot Press: Everglades Wildflowers (2002), Florida Keys Wildflowers (2004), Exploring Everglades National Park and the Surrounding Area (2005), and Florida Icons: 50 Classic Views of the Sunshine State (2011). He is also the author of four laminated plant guides produced by Quick Reference Publishing: Southeast Florida Wildflowers, Southwest Florida Wildflowers, Central Florida Wildflowers, and Trees of South Florida.

Roger's hobbies include wildflower photography, kayak fishing, canoeing, camping, and gardening.
