Topics
Scott Zona’s performances generally run for 50 minutes + 10 minutes for questions. He is a dynamic speaker and works without a net.
The Natural History of Palms
An intimate look at palms, the Princes of the Plant Kingdom and the Big Game of the Plant World. The presentation introduces the palms, a family of over 2500 species from the tropics and subtropics. Topics include palm geography, palm record-holders, morphology, pollination and fruit dispersal, and new discoveries.
Salvias for Hot, Humid Climates
Salvias (members of the genus Salvia) are not just for cool temperate or Mediterranean climates; they grow in the humid tropics as well. With over 900 species, the genus has something for everyone’s taste and every garden. Salvias are great for butterfly and hummingbird gardens, too.
The Astonishing World of Tropical Plants
This presentation focuses the competition for light and nutrients that led to the evolution of certain tropical specialties, including tall trees with big seeds, lianas, parasitic and saprophytic plants, epiphytes and litter-trapping plants. Also covered are the many amazing adaptations of pollination and seed dispersal.
Sex in the Garden
Flowers are all about sex! This presentation explores the world of pollination, which is the transfer of pollen to the stigma and a necessary step in sexual reproduction. The marvelous methods by which this transfer is accomplished – birds, bats, wind, water, etc. – are explored in depth.

Scott's talk to the Tropical Fern & Exotic Plant Society was excellent. He has so much background knowledge that when he comments on the beautiful powerpoint slides, he conveys multiple levels of information to an audience ranging from hobbyist to expert. He does this in an engaging way with occasional humor. We will definitely invite him to speak again.
